The Powerful Words Project

Learning Objective

The objective of the Powerful Words Project is to synthesize what you have learned about language, power, and the state from your readings of Sallust's Bellum Catilinae and Cicero's Oratio Prima in Catilinam. Putting into practice your experience with the grammar, rhetoric, and political and historical context of this period in Roman history, you will compose one or two sentences that capture the spirit of these two writers and their times.

Menu of Elements

The menu is broken down into six categories: media, grammar, rhetoric, topics, grading, and vocabulary. With the exception of the grading category, you may choose which elements to include in your composition. You must choose at least one from each category.

Now that you have looked through the menu, make some preliminary selections on this google form survey. I will reference these selections when I talk with you about your project.

Vocabulary

You may use any words from the Cicero and Sallust vocabulary lists. You have been quizzed on all of these so they will be familiar to you. You may use other words too. I will consult with you on nuances and usage.

Example Sentences

I have selected a number of excellent example sentences from both the Cicero and the Sallust that we have read. You may model your sentence on any one of these or a combination. It is good to be derivative but bad to be counterfeit.

My Own Powerful Words Project

Here is my sentence from 2020. See if you can translate it. I have glossed each word for you. Once you are satisfied with your translation, analyze the grammar and rhetoric. Comment on the style.
